Civic Center

Civic Center

The same photograph of San Francisco’s City Hall and Civic Center Plaza appears with three different texts. The first refers to the gay pride parade; the second to the Briggs Initiative, which would have banned gays and lesbians from teaching in California public schools. Harvey Milk, San Francisco’s first openly gay city supervisor, successfully campaigned to defeat the measure. The third text addresses the assassinations of Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone, who were killed inside City Hall by a former city supervisor, an event that marked the beginning of the end of the free-spirited 1970s in gay San Francisco.
